Millions of low-to-moderate-income taxpayers rely on free, basic tax preparation each year, and thousands of ordinary VITA volunteers like you prepare these returns! The United Way of Central Jersey (UWCJ) needs you on its tax prep team for 2022.
Last season 123 volunteers participated in this critical asset-building engagement and prepared over 3,500 returns. The results - Over $2 million in refunds returned to taxpayers in the community, with filing fee savings to taxpayers of over $450,000.
United Way of Central Jersey teams up with the IRS and community partners each year to provide free tax services through VITA. 85% of our volunteers prepared remotely last season. With the uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 variants, most volunteers will continue to prepare returns virtually. Fifteen volunteers can be safely accommodated on-site daily. Vaccinations are required for all volunteers coming into the office.
For the 2021 filing season, United Way of Central Jersey saved residents close to half a million dollars in tax preparation costs through free, qualified tax preparation. According to the IRS, United Way and its partners are leading providers of volunteer income tax assistance in Middlesex County.
"This service is aimed at low and moderate-income taxpayers," said Gloria Aftanski, President of United Way of Central Jersey. "For the 2021 filing season, over $2,000,000 was returned to residents of the community in the form of tax credits and refunds."
The IRS has selected United Way to direct a coalition of community partners in order to increase the reach of the VITA.
The Middlesex County, NJ VITA Coalition is recruiting new/additional volunteers in various capacities to help with this effort. Volunteers must complete certification timely and be ready to start by February 1, 2022, through April 30, 2022.
United Way of Central Jersey is located at 32 Ford Avenue in Milltown and will serve as the hub for Middlesex County VITA tax returns.
Volunteer Positions
Income Tax Preparers (Virtual & In-Office)
Prepare Federal & State returns. Volunteers receive hands-on training using professional tax software. (3 certifications needed)
Quality Reviewers (Virtual & In-Office)
Quality Review returns prepared by volunteers using IRS standards of control for electronic e-file. (3 certifications needed)
Greeter/Intake Specialist/Translators (Virtual, In-Office & Curbside):
Review intake form for completion. Conduct taxpayer interviews for additional information via phone/Zoom/Curbside. Bi-lingual Spanish volunteers are in high demand. (first 2 certifications only)
